Kate Olson and her Gold Retriever Walter were an inseparable duo. During a planned trip to visit family, they were separated, and the dog disappeared. Though Kate searched everywhere for the missing canine, it was to no avail. A year later, she discovered something amazing.
The search party
Kate and Walter traveled from New Hampshire to Missouri to attend a family gathering. While they were there Kate took a side trip with with her boyfriend, while a family member took Walter for a walk. Unfortunately, Walter slipped his collar, bolted into the woods, and disappeared.
With no knowledge of the area, Kate knew it’d be difficult to locate the dog. She stayed in Missouri for weeks and posted fliers on every post she saw. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and she was forced to return home to New Hampshire.
Kate couldn’t just sit around while her dog was gone, though. She created a page called “Where’s Walter?” and posted information about the lost dog. Over a thousand followers supported the cause and helped out with the situation.
Lost Paws Trapping, a Missouri organization reached out to Kate and offered to set up a camera and traps to help catch Walter. Grateful, Kate agreed, happy that she wasn’t alone in the search.
Triumphant survivor
After almost a year, one of the cameras captured a dog that looked like Walter nearby. Hopeful, the team from Lost Paws Trapping set up a trap in the spot to see if it was actually him. The next day, Walter was inside the trap.
Kate dropped everything and left on the next flight to Missouri, excited to see her beloved Walter after so long.
Once the two were reunited, Kate bursts into tears. Walter was in good shape, but he wasn’t the cleanest. He had also lost a few pounds, but his cheery personality was still present.
Lost Paws Trapping determined that Walter had been alone in the woods behind an industrial park, about 10 miles from where he disappeared, while he was gone. Yet, the 3-year-old dog managed to keep himself safe, even benefiting from a local man feeding him.
Not surprisingly, Walter was very glad to finally see Kate again. After being was pampered by a local groomer, he was scheduled for a vet appointment to further check his condition. After that, Kate and Walter were on their way home.
