Losing a beloved pet can be as emotional as losing a family member. It’s easy to see dogs as part of our family as they are the most loyal and endearing creatures that serve as our companions. That’s why when they get sick, it’s hard for us to swallow when the vet gives us a grim diagnosis.
But at least when we know that they are terminal, we are somewhat emotionally prepared for what is about to happen. Not that it is any less painful, but when our dog is suddenly taken away from us, it can be a bit more difficult and emotionally draining. That’s true not just for us humans, but also for our other pets who have grown a bond with them.
Sensed the illness
The Copeland family has two dogs, their eight-year-old Bulldog Bubba and a six-year-old Chihuahua named Gamer. The two dogs had developed a very strong bond and would always be by each other’s side. They would do almost anything together and would spend their days playing and sleeping. Unfortunately, Bubba died unexpectedly from congestive heart failure.
Looking back, the Copelands realized that Gamer might have sensed Bubba’s illness. They didn’t notice it before, but when they got to talking, the family realized that the days before the dog’s demise, Gamer would frequently go to his brother’s kennel and shower him with kisses. Although they were very close, Gamer didn’t usually do that.
One last goodbye
The Copelands had Bubba’s remains cremated. They then brought him back to their home with the ashes placed inside a small rectangular box. And when they set the box on the floor, next to Gamer, what he did next brought a river of emotions flooding out of his owners.
Gamer approached the box and started kissing it. He then laid himself on the floor and started rolling. He would then try to put his head on the box. To his owner’s, it seemed like Gamer was saying his final goodbye to his brother.
It hit the Copellands that the dog knew it was his brother. All of them are going to miss this dog, who has been a significant part of their life. All of them will never forget the love that they all shared between them.
